In Joy Ann Coll’s “A King’s Ransom” (ISBN 1470006308), Megan Wentworth heads to the Middle East on vacation only to find herself first detained on suspicion of spying, and then falling in love with her captor. She is trapped by the mysterious and powerful Sheikh Mikal al-Shareef, who is unsettled by Megan’s uncommon strength and beauty.

Yet the captor and the victim soon find themselves deeply attracted to each other. Megan must choose between protecting her family’s honor and giving in to her desires for this dangerous, foreign man. Their unlikely romance is complicated when Megan must help her accomplice to escape and is used as a pawn in a battle between warring factions.

The sheikh doesn’t know whether to trust her or leave her. As the leader of his country, he knows he should shun her; as a red-blooded man, he wants to have her and believes she can fulfill his destiny to produce a male heir. The sheikh must confront his desires and his past when a band of rebels attempts to overthrow his rule by kidnapping Megan, forcing him to face losing the only woman he has ever really loved.

“A King’s Ransom” is a tale of a woman who must balance her duty to family and country with her passion for an unlikely lover in a foreign land. Coll was inspired to write the book after a tour of Egypt, where she met modern and welcoming Arabs, both Muslim and Coptic Christian. The country’s culture, with its mix of ancient history and enchantment with modern technology, impressed her, as did the sheikhs with their opulent wealth, their friendly, veiled women and their all-encompassing hospitality. Coll realized she had the perfect setting for a story of love blooming amidst the desert sands.

“A King’s Ransom” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
