"The Left Has Always Been Right" by R. P. Ericksen

In “The Left Has Always Been Right” (ISBN 1477539247), R. P. Ericksen fights back against the historical amnesia of radical conservatives to show how left-wing, progressive ideas have forged the moral ideals of modern America. “My work argues that every step forward on the most important issues has been a progressive step, from creating democracy and ending slavery to overcoming entrenched sexism and racism,” says Ericksen. “This is a critique against right-wing Republicanism today.”

Ericksen believes the economy and civil rights, in particular, are two issues that the American left wing understood better than anyone else. When much of the country looked away from racist Jim Crow laws in the South, liberals were busy organizing and working with African-Americans to end this historical injustice. In a similar manner, reformers in government worked with America’s progressive labor movement to usher in workplace norms and rights still cherished to this day. Safety regulations, improvements in pay, a reduced workweek, a minimum wage and laws restricting child labor were advances made by progressives who fought to establish workplaces that were fair and equitable.

In the same manner, according to Ericksen, left-wing observers in the 19th century saw how the results of unfettered capitalism routinely bludgeoned the American people with abuses in the marketplace and a depression every decade. When these financial crises culminated in the Great Depression of the 1930s, the federal government created institutions and regulatory safeguards to make sure that the disaster would never happen again.

“Franklin Roosevelt taught us how to use active government to save us from economic calamity,” says Ericksen. “Even though we had a depression at least once a decade before Roosevelt’s New Deal, we have never had one since!”

Historically accurate and honest about its biases, “The Left Has Always Been Right” is a book about the financial and moral foundations given to us by the country’s long tradition of progressive politics. A salvo against the historical revisionism practiced by the far right of today, Ericksen hopes his political work will show that liberals gave us the country’s most important laws and norms.
