"The Freedom...Cage" by Luong Ung-Lai

“The Freedom…Cage” (ISBN 1475273541) by Luong Ung-Lai is an autobiography told through the fictional voice of 11-year-old Moy. In the 1970s on the streets of Cambodia, the rule of the Khmer Rouge created an unimaginably cruel world for civilians of all ages.

This militant group forced people out of the city limits, leaving them with nothing but the shirts on their backs. Moy watched as those around her starved, but when there was food, they used coconut shells as bowls and tree leaves as spoons. The pain and starvation afflicting Moy and her fellow man only brought smiles and satisfaction to the Khmer Rouge.

Moy welcomes readers into her hellish reality, sharing her own experiences as well as those of her grandfather and mother. Her mother, Keem Lai, suffered through tragic circumstances in Cambodia and at night, when her consciousness gave way to frightening thoughts.

“The Freedom…Cage” navigates the narrow path of decades-old memories and reality, while submersing readers into the confusion of a politically and emotionally troubling world through the eyes of a young girl. Despite all the nightmares and heartache Ung-Lai experienced while writing this fictional memoir, she hopes that readers are enlightened at how cruel the world and human beings can be. Above all, she hopes that her story stands as a testament of survival, hope and faith.

“The Freedom…Cage” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
