In “The Beauty of a Diamond Through the Eyes of a Coach” (ISBN 1468145673), Dan Clouser shares his life over his 23 seasons as a baseball coach of young athletes. He opens his career, warts and all, to scrutiny in the hopes of showing the relevance that baseball has for life in general. In doing so, he hopes to restore more dignity to the playing of organized baseball and prepare coaches, athletes and parents for the challenges that entails.
Clouser challenges coaches to look at their own lives and figure out if they are coaching for the right reasons. He also asks the players to look at their actions, both on and off the field. In his own coaching style, he emphasizes the relationship between baseball and everyday life, showing how good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, class and respect for authority are the foundation of a well-lived life. To the parents in the stands, he also poses the uncomfortable challenge of allowing their children to make their own mistakes and learn from them.
In essence, Clouser believes that coaches need to understand that they have a responsibility to their players that far outweighs just teaching them to hit, pitch or field a ground ball. As authority figures, they have a responsibility to model ethical behavior, both on and off the field. Having been involved with the sport of baseball his entire life, he wants to share the wisdom he gained from his triumphs and mistakes.
“The Beauty of a Diamond Through the Eyes of a Coach” would make excellent reading for the parents and coaches of young athletes, regardless of their choice of sport. Too often in modern society, Clouser argues, ethical choices and mutual respect are cast aside to pursue winning at all costs. This book showcases an alternative of positive mentality that encourages good sportsmanship and ultimately sees baseball as preparation for the real challenges of life.
