L. S. Miller addresses the prospect of death and how it affects loved ones in his novel “A Death in Our Family” (ISBN 1469923793). Miller tenderly addresses the morbid topic of dying and the legacy we leave to encourage readers to rethink how they are living their lives.
His main character, Lassiter “Last” Chance Barkley is diagnosed with terminal cancer which leads him to question the value of his life to date, what his legacy might be and how he can use what little time remains to unite his family and leave them in a better place to live their lives.
Miller says death takes us all. “No other topic is so universal, crossing without prejudice all boundaries geographic and cultural, unfazed by race or creed, species, genus and phylum irrelevant. The fear of death, of the unknown, gives death its power over the living.” Once Last overcomes that fear, he can be happy and even proud of how he has lead his life. Miller hopes that this revelation will help his readers look at their futures to decide how they want to be remembered and, most of all, to value their time on Earth.
“Life is short, but it is good,” Miller says. “You should provide for your loved ones for as long as you can and be happy with what you’ve accomplished. Death is just another rung on the ladder.”
He also stresses the importance of leaving your family or friends in a better place once you’re gone. Miller relates his book to Monty Python’s song, “Always Keep on the Bright Side of Life” from the “Life of Brian” movie. While death can be a complex subject to talk about and deal with, the author hopes his novel will make readers value the time they have on Earth and subsequently change their lives for the better, and do it with a smile.
