"Grandview Days" by Timothy James Flaherty

“Grandview Days: A McKeesport Memoir” (ISBN 1468020412) by Timothy James Flaherty offers a journey into the past in search of the people, places and events that shaped the author and colored the tapestry that has become his life.

More than 20 years since his last visit to the area, Flaherty returns to McKeesport on a personal journey of discovery. Interested in personal, cultural and environmental history, Flaherty marvels at the rocky hills and ramshackle buildings of his youth. The trip soon becomes introspective as Flaherty considers the family that once lived here and the life they shared together. Loving but deeply flawed, he recalls his parents as products of their own difficult upbringings and the circumstances of life around them. Affectionate but honest, the book portrays a family as it was and describes the values and fears it conferred on him.

“People are complicated by their sometimes rough treatment by the world,” says Flaherty, “which can affect their functioning as parents and as role models but if, in the long run, one tries their best that is nearly always seen and appreciated for what it is, and is enough.”

Flaherty also discusses the environmental mayhem he has witnessed in his lifetime, including the degradation of the Western Pennsylvania riverine areas, primarily by the steel industry of the 19th and 20th centuries and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill he experienced from St. Petersburg. Deeply concerned with environmental stewardship, Flaherty emphasizes these themes in addition to moral and ethical values.
