“Sendero: The Path Back” (ISBN 1466366850), a novel by John Rouse, tells the story of Joe Petrini, a former Peace Corps volunteer returning to Peru after 22  years, confronted with the murder of a friend and reunited with his friend’s widow, Petrini’s first love.

Dismissed in unpleasant circumstances from the Peace Corps, Petrini has ever since tried to block the memory from his life. But when a series of events cause him to turn his mind once again to Peru, he finds himself traveling back to the place he tried to forget. In a new Peru struggling to recover from the ravages of war with the Sendero Luminoso and in the midst of the Japanese Embassy Hostage Crisis, Petrini must join with Maria, the widow of his murdered friend, on a journey to revisit his past and shape a new future.

“The story is partly based on my own experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in an isolated valley in Peru in the late 1960s,” says Rouse. “The experience had a big impact on my life and has served as a source of inspiration.”

Set primarily in the Colca River Valley where Rouse once worked, the novel weaves together historic events of the mid-1990s with a fictional tale of romance and mystery featuring a full cast of characters. Written to engage and entertain, the book is intended to appeal to readers interested in mystery and romance novels, travel narratives or the culture and history of Latin America.

“Sendero: The Path Back” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
