"The Spelling Witch" by Dr. N. N. Labrooy

In “The Spelling Witch” (ISBN 1461140730), Dr. N. N. LaBrooy encourages children to take on the challenge of spelling through a playful fairy tale. When a mischievous witch wreaks havoc on the easy-to-learn alphabet, young children must uncover her secrets and learn her tricks.

Before the Spelling Witch appears, spelling is easy to learn. Each letter corresponds to a sound, and anyone can read and spell after learning all the sounds. But the Spelling Witch, who hates to see children read, flies down on her broomstick and scrambles up the alphabet. The new order makes it hard for children to learn how to read and spell.

One night, a magical spell falls off the witch’s broomstick. Two children and their dog find the spell, which leads them to the Land of Alphabet, where the Letter People live. With the help of the Letter People and their leader, the Spelling Bee, they create a plan to stop the Spelling Witch and drive her away.

The two children, the Letter People and the Spelling Bee face new tricks and obstacles as they try to stop her from mounting her challenges. Young readers should identify with their efforts, as there is nothing like a challenge to bring out the fighting spirit in a child.

Children will transform their perception of spelling as an illogical nightmare and a chore to an exciting challenge. Young readers, who may be learning their alphabet, will engage with sounds and letters while being entertained by the story.

“The Spelling Witch” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
