In “Class Fives: Origins” (ISBN 1466308621), Jon H. Thompson builds an unusual superhero story around two guys who are the very definition of normal. Roger Malloy and John Klienschmidt are ordinary fellows who possess some powerfully unusual abilities. Roger’s body is impervious to pain or harm, while John is able to make small leaps in time.
For years, they have hidden their powers, but each man now makes the mistake of deploying his abilities to save a human life. Roger rushes into a multi-car freeway fire to save two small children; John leaps back in time to ambush a liquor store robber before he can even pull his gun. For their valiant efforts, the two men soon find themselves under surveillance by a highly covert and powerful government agency.
Allowing themselves to be tested by the agency which is worried they might pose a threat to national security, Roger and John are introduced to a young astrophysicist, also working with the agency. The astrophysicist reveals to them that their superpowers are tied to a failed secret Russian experiment conducted 35 years ago, which happens to overlap with the very moment of both mens’ conceptions. The Russian scientist believes that humans live in an unreal dream of a universe, and that the real substantial world lies beyond in a parallel universe of dark matter. He is attempting to recreate his experiment, hoping to rip another hole in the universe, even if such a foolhardy attempt threatens the physical world in which all humans dwell. Brilliant, insane and obsessed, the aging Russian scientist commands his serial killer assistant to take out anyone with knowledge of his plans.
“Class Fives” is a science fiction novel that relies on psychological drama as much as raw adventure to power its cerebral plot. Despite its theoretical physics, the book is at heart a meditation on choice, how we make them and how, as humans, we deal with the fallout from our actions. Even though its protagonists possess superhuman abilities, “Class Fives” is ultimately a tale about the limitations of humanity in a universe that is at once both repetitively mundane and infinitely complex.
