"Life Chooses Us" by Gregory Mills

In his book “Life Chooses Us” (ISBN 1466448040), Gregory Mills describes the struggle of battling a lifelong family fight with the illness of depression, as he presents an autobiographical novel detailing his own life.

The story features the lives of Michael and Morgan. The chapters alternate between the two characters and share the situations in each individual’s life. Morgan is a contemporary middle-aged man making observations on life, his childhood, politics, personal values and anything that strikes him as relative to society in America today.

Michael’s story involves a chronological telling of meeting a stunningly beautiful and accomplished, yet intriguingly complex woman. It is only after their life commitment is made that he learns of her struggle with the illness of depression. The story details the couple’s three decades together and their shared battle with her treatment-resistant depression before the woman comes to a life altering decision.

The human drama that unfolds throughout the book is based on a factual perspective of Mills’ own life. Each anecdote in the book was an event that Mills lived through.

“This is my life. I was married to one of the most beautiful creatures on earth and we fought for her wellness year after year, through trial after trial,” Mills says. “Through her unconditional love, she stayed in this life for me and ultimately, in her final act, and in the insurmountable depth of her illness, gave me her last gift and I believe in her mind – set me free.”

According to Mills, the single greatest factor of his work is the crafting of a single life into two separate characters. He gives an everyman’s approach to the treatment and challenges to mental illness as well as middle-aged life in America today.

“Life Chooses Us” is designed to allow the reader to witness a traditional love story with an unconditional wrinkle and the subsequent views and overall social stigma of mental health. Mills believes that the story will allow the reader to be entertained while also becoming informed about an often inherent and troubling disease and an illness that does not discriminate between gender, race or social strata, impacting the lives of an estimated forty million Americans and their families.

“Life Chooses Us” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
