Over the past three decades, Debra A. Copeland has developed five novels, the first of which has recently been released under the title “The Edification of Sissy Dare” (ISBN 1463539223). The book is a fictional story of life’s hardships and personal growth as seen through the eyes of Sissy Dare. Written for a general audience, Copeland believes this novel is not only an insight into the deep emotions of love and hate, but is also an interesting commentary on the cross between patriarchy and feminism.
In April of 1988, Sissy Dare sits down to write a letter to her sister Alice, who she has not spoken to in years. As she reflects on all that has happened over the last couple of decades, the novel opens into a series of excerpts from Sissy’s diaries and journals, starting with her father’s suicide in November 1965 when Sissy is 15 years old. After his death, Sissy and her five brothers and sisters are left to pick up the pieces as their mother’s mental and physical health begin to decline.
Sissy finds a sliver of hope and happiness when working for the handsome and charismatic Aaron, a paraplegic lawyer who just arrived in their small town of Polk, Virginia from Boston to practice law on a grant. While their relationship starts out as simply professional, it develops into friendship and even love—at least for Sissy.
Over the years, Sissy divulges the rollercoaster relationship that she maintains with Aaron. From their reunion in Washington to their eventual marriage, she desperately searches for happiness with him. But when the wealthy parties and his addiction to cocaine and women becomes too much, Sissy finds herself divorced and deeply depressed. She details her successes and failures as she picks herself up and moves on with her life until after nearly 20 years away, she believes that going home is the best thing to do. Returning to her roots, surrounded by family, Sissy comes to the greatest revelation.
Copeland believes the transformation that Sissy goes through over the course of several decades mirrors the one through which our world is currently transitioning. She hopes that the fictional story of Sissy shows readers that crises open the door for change and evolution while encouraging a global sense of community and family.
