Robert W. Merry tells how the old Anglo Saxon elite of America took the country into World War II and created the postwar era in his biography, “Taking on the World: Joseph and Stewart Alsop – Guardians of the American Century” (ISBN 1467901849). Merry, himself a journalist, uses the Alsop brothers’ lives as a window on America from 1935 to 1975.
The Alsops, blood relations of the Roosevelts and close friends of the Kennedys, served as journalistic cheerleaders for the “Wise Men’’ of their era – the Achesons, Bohlens, Harrimans, Kennans and McCoys, along with many other notables of that time. The globe-trotting journalists lived an action-packed life, reporting on major global events and American political developments.
As an aspiring journalist in the 1970s, Merry developed an intense admiration for Stewart Alsop, then the back-page columnist for Newsweek. He soon discovered just how fascinating their lives were and decided to share their story with the world.
Events in the books include Joe waiting an entire day to get an interview with Charles de Gaulle, Joe having a dinner party for President Kennedy at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Stewart lunching with an irascible Winston Churchill in the 1950s.
“The book dramatizes the lives of the Alsops and their friends through wars, heated political arguments, elegant dinner parties and stealthy reporting missions. There are abundant funny human stories and sad ones as well,” Merry says.
Merry hopes readers will learn more about American history while gaining a new understanding of it through the eyes of these famous journalists.
“Taking on the World: Joseph and Stewart Alsop – Guardians of the American Century” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
