According to American Kennel Club registration records, German shepherds are the second most-popular canine breed in America. In “Shepherd Girl: A Dog Story” (ISBN 1467938386), Cat Needham chronicles the adventures of Athena, a silly, clumsy, vain and unusual long-coated German shepherd who won the author’s heart and whose exploits soften the serious and sometimes scary reputation of her breed.

A lifelong “cat person,”Needham took an unlikely leap of faith in getting her. Not sure what to expect from a creature reputed to make for an excellent guard-dog, she was soon surprised to discover that Athena is a fun-loving, goofy and downright hilarious companion. The book shares Athena’s adventures including chasing lawn gnomes, play-bowing to stuffed toys at an age when she should have known better, a disastrous sheep-herding lesson and even foiling a stranger’s abduction of Needham in a dark parking lot.

“I wrote funny stories about Athena to friends and all of them urged me to write a book,” says Needham. “Although Athena is at times exasperating, clownish and not at all what I expected of a German shepherd from such an impressive European lineage, the unconditional devotion between us is unmistakable.”

“If you’ve ever considered bringing home the spunky little German shepherd puppy that caught your eye, you might think again after reading Cat Needham’s hilarious recount of one frenzied moment after another with Athena,” says Bob Tarte, author of “Enslaved by Ducks” and “Fowl Weather.”

“Shepherd Girl: A Dog Story” is available for sale online at Amazon.com, in e-book format and other channels.
