"To Steal a Crown" by Raleigh Bruce Barlowe

“To Steal a Crown” (ISBN 1461020107) by Raleigh Bruce Barlowe follows a governess and adviser to the royal family whose position affords a unique perspective on the privileges and dangers of the throne.

When young Eleanor Beaufort is named governess and advisor to Margaret Beaufort, heiress to the throne of England, she is filled with excitement at the prospect of a place at court among royalty. But as the years pass, her role is fraught with the complicated responsibilities of adulthood among hidden loyalties, dangerous enemies and the unrelenting pressures of ruling the kingdom. Always a keen observer, Eleanor witnesses Margaret’s second marriage and the birth of Henry Tudor. She is present when Henry is stripped of power and his later reinstatement after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Fields. Eleanor offers a detailed, personal account of lives of royalty during a time of historic conflict and upheaval.

“My book offers a fictional account of actual historical events in 15th century England,” Barlowe says. “It’s a reinterpretation of a continuing historical episode centered around the character of Eleanor, governess and adviser to Margaret Beaufort, throughout her life.”

Intended to educate and entertain, the book is filled with detailed references to actual historical characters, daily life in the 15th century and references to political and cultural movements specific to the times. In the character of Eleanor, Barlowe offers an inside look into a tumultuous period in English history
