“Service above Self – To the Extreme” is one way to describe the selfless performance of the elite Navy SEALs. And it doesn’t stop once they retire from active service.
A group of retired Navy SEALs from Tampa swim the bay every January to help fund the families of SEALs lost in service to our country. The Frogman Swim started as an impromptu event to raise money for Lt. Dan Cnossen, a SEAL who lost both his legs in Afghanistan to IED explosion in 2009.
The first swim attracted 38 swimmers who braved the frigid waters of Tampa Bay to raise $33,000 for Cnossen and his family.
“Government benefits to families only go so far. The difference between what our families need for living their lives, educating their children and life’s basic needs has to come from somewhere,” says Rory O’Connor, a Navy SEAL and the Frogman Swim race director. “We are proud to help provide the means to make life just a little easier for the relatives and children of those who have been injured or in the extreme, made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.”
Florida Lift Systems became a sponsor of this event after becoming acquainted with O’Connor and hearing about the cause that supports Tampa Bay veterans and their families. Rob Webb, vice president of sales, says, “Our ability to play a small part in the lives of this elite team of patriots is the least we can do. Our intent is to continue to sponsor the Frogman Swim as long as SEALs like Rory are willing to swim for their peers. It’s a great cause and a privilege to be a part of.”
Since it’s first year, the support and momentum of the Frogman Swim has continues to grow. This year’s event was certainly a success, raising over $100,000, which is $25,000 over their initial fundraising goals. However, more help is always needed in assisting the foundation in ensuring that the Navy SEAL motto of “Never Leaving a Man Behind” continues, even after they leave the battle field.
