"In My Petticoat" by Linda L. Hutchison

Linda L. Hutchison educates readers on how to understand those living with mental illnesses in her memoir, “In My Petticoat: A Touch of Insanity” (ISBN 1466487771). Hutchison wants to show society that a mental illness can happen to almost anyone and affects almost everyone.

As a young girl in Ohio she expected to live an ordinary life. She had expectations of being a wife and mother. She dreamed of raising a family, becoming a grandparent and leaving a legacy of a life well-lived by all who knew her. However, the birth of Joey changed everything.

Hutchison says that her story isn’t just about mental illness, but rather a story about survival against all odds. She wants to change the way the world views mental illness, and remove all related stigmas.

She mentions the lack of publicity for families who have loved ones with a mental illness and how they endure the process is one of the many reasons for publishing her memoir.

“My story is the unvarnished truth of what a family lives with when one of their loved ones has an undiagnosed mental illness,” Hutchison says. “Even when the illness is diagnosed, life is not much better. Society is still in denial that something major must be done to help those afflicted and their families.”

Hutchison aims to give the raw truth about mental illnesses, and essentially, tells it like it is through themes of despair, triumph and defeat. She wants readers to come away with a sense of hope from how she lived through her son’s mental illnesses and she survived to make something positive happen for others.
