Madeira Beach Fundamental students help raise funds for brain tumor research

(PR NewsChannel) / November 30, 2011 / CLEARWATER, Fla.

Miles For Hope LogoFor the second year in a row, Madeira Beach Fundamental students are helping raise awareness and funding for brain tumor research.  Sponsored by the student council, the Madeira Beach Manta Rays are stinging away the gray in a “Going Gray” fundraiser November 29th, 30th and December 1st.  All donations collected will be presented to Miles for Hope, Inc., a 501©(3) non-profit organization dedicated to funding cutting-edge brain tumor research, raising awareness and providing medically necessary travel assistance to brain tumor patients.

Brain tumors and brain cancer is something that has touched the lives of students and teachers alike at Madeira Beach Fundamental. When asked why the students at Madeira Beach Fundamental decided to tackle the issue of brain tumors, seventh grade civics teacher Grace Nohlgren stated a direct impact was the main cause for action.

“In our school year 2010-2011, we had several faculty members and students who were impacted by brain cancer among their family and/or friends.  Our student council discussed the issue and decided to find a non-profit organization we could donate money to for the cause of brain cancer research.  After several phone calls to area hospitals, we were given the name of the Miles for Hope organization and the rest is history. Madeira Beach Fundamental School now has an annual money collection drive for Miles for Hope,” Nohlgren says.

In 2010, in honor and memory of those who have been impacted by this disease, the students held their first “Going Gray” fundraiser, raising more than $4,000 for brain tumor research in only one day.  This year’s fundraiser is a three day event and the students are setting their goal even higher.

The top fundraising elementary and middle school classes will win an ice cream social.  Top fundraising elementary and middle school student will each win four tickets to a Tampa Bay Lightning game.  Every student and staff member who makes a donation will receive a “Go Gray” awareness wristband. The funds raised will help fund brain tumor research and clinical trials, and provide medically needy travel assistance to brain tumor patients.

Brain tumors affect over 200,000 people each year; one person every three minutes in the United States. They are also the leading cause of solid tumor cancer deaths in children under the age of 20.

A check for this year’s proceeds will be presented to Miles For Hope, Inc. on December 8th from 1:30-4:30p.m. at the ice cream social being held at Madeira Beach Fundamental, located at 591 Tom Stuart Causeway, Madeira Beach, Florida 33708-2877.
