The British Skin Foundation surveyed 123 dermatologists and 88 percent concluded eczema is on the rise on a “problematic scale” and is not caused by breastfeeding, as formerly thought. Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman says he sees the rising trend in eczema cases, treating many children with the disease in his practice.
“Eczema leaves dry and itchy rashes all over the body and can be very uncomfortable for the child,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “This study can get the ball rolling on new prevention techniques to protect children from eczema.”
Researchers from King’s College London, along with researchers at the University of Nottingham and the University of Ulm, looked at more than 51,000 children aged eight to 12 from 21 different countries and showed that regardless of whether a child had been breastfed or not, they can still be susceptible to the disease.
The Tampa dermatologist says that using known preventive measures can help decrease the risk for developing the skin disease.
“Breastfeeding can’t cure everything, you also have to do other things in addition,” Forman says. “Parents should monitor the chemical intake that surrounds their children every day and try to change that if possible.”
Lead author Dr. Carsten Flohr agrees with the Tampa dermatologist and thinks that mothers shouldn’t stop breastfeeding.
“We’re not questioning the benefits of breastfeeding,” Flohr says. “But when it comes to prevention of eczema, neither breast-feeding itself nor prolonged breastfeeding seems to be protective.”
Moisturizers and creams prescribed by dermatologists can help keep eczema outbreaks under control.
