As the NFL lockout comes to an end and training camp gets ready to begin a crisis management public relations expert says because the season has been salvaged and collateral damage to fans minimal, lingering negativity from football fans will be minimal.
“Had the NFL lockout continued and the season was greatly reduced or cancelled, the fan fallout would’ve been astronomical,” says Glenn Selig, a crisis management PR expert from the firm The Publicity Agency (www.thepublicityagency.com) who advises companies and organizations in brand management. “Because the NFL lockout has minimal impact on the season and on fans directly any feelings of negativity will dissipate fast.
“The players felt the impact of the NFL lockout and so did owners, but fans have not yet been affected.”
Owners ratified the new 10-year collective bargaining agreement last Thursday. Players started the process on ratification and re-certification Monday. Players are expected to report to training camp facilities Wednesday. Free agency should begin Saturday.
Selig says had the season been impacted, both NFL players and team owners would’ve lost in the eyes of the public.
“No matter what the issues actually are, in general fans see the fight as being between the rich and richer,” says Selig. “The public sees both sides as greedy. Fans see it as owners getting rich on their money and players whining that they are not being enough money.
“That sentiment never resonates well particularly when the enconomy is in shambles and some of these fans would be thankful to have a job–let alone one that payed six or seven figures to play football. Football is fun. For some it is a great escape from reality and provides enjoyment especially during tough times.”
