Link TV, the U.S.-based independent global affairs network, will exclusively premiere To Educate a Girl, a new documentary about girls’ education on Friday, June 24. The film is introduced by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Honorary Global Chair of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) and a passionate advocate of efforts to ensure all girls have an opportunity to an education.
In 2010, filmmakers Frederick Rendina and Oren Rudavsky traveled to Nepal and Uganda to investigate: “What does it take to educate a girl?” ten years after the UN launched its global initiative to provide equal access to education for girls by 2015. According to latest estimates, girls make up more than half of the 67 million children not enrolled in primary school around the world, although this represents marked progress since 2000, when more than two-thirds of 100 million children not in school were girls. Against the backdrop of conflict and poverty, the filmmakers provide unprecedented access into the lives of girls struggling to change destinies of poverty, early marriage and childbirth, or exploitation.
The film’s score features work from well-known world music artists, including songs by Zap Mama; original music by Anthony Tidd, producer for artists including Black-Eyed Peas, the Roots, Baaba Maal and Zap Mama; and vocals by acclaimed Ugandan-American singer Somi. This film was commissioned by UNICEF as part of its strong support to the UNGEI partnership.
