The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this week that sunscreen manufacturers will need to change their labeling starting next year. Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman was featured in a story on WFLA’s morning news explaining the new guidelines.
Sunscreen will now have to pass the FDA’s protection test against both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays before it can be labeled “broad spectrum.” Any product that is not broad spectrum or is broad spectrum but has an SPF between 2 to 14 will be required to have a warning stating that the product has not been shown to help prevent skin cancer or early skin aging.
“This regulation is long overdue,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “Everyone should use sunscreen daily. This new ruling will help people select the right product and protection level.”
Forman also added that sunscreen use needs to start at a young age. “Most kids rack up 50 to 80 percent of their lifetime sun exposure before the age of 18. That is why it is important to teach children the importance of sunscreen and make sure it is used regularly,” he says.
