Background:

On May 21, 2008 Drew Peterson turned himself in to police on a gun charge.

The criminal complaint against Peterson, issued by the Will County State's Attorney's office, says Peterson possessed an assault rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches which violates state law.  It's a Class 3 felony.

The weapon was seized after Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in October but before Peterson resigned as a police officer.

Peterson used the AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle while he was a police officer, which Joel Brodsky, his attorney, contends makes him an exception under state and federal law.

A week after the arrest, Peterson released a photo of himself on duty carrying the weapon in question while speaking with actor John Travolta (see link below) who was in town for a promotional tour.

Peterson has been named a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy.  The body of his third wife Kathleen was exhumed and ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. 

Peterson has not been charged in either case and maintains his innocence.
