(PRNewsChannel) / November 19, 2009 / Tampa, Fla. / Gov. Charlie Crist asked the state's Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to help put the brakes on drivers who send text messages while behind the wheel.
Crist wants the Legislature to take up the issue during its 2010 session. 14 states and the District of Columbia have outlawed texting while driving.
"It would be a relief to have Florida join those states that recognize just how deadly texting can be," says Tampa personal injury lawyer Fred Zinober. "There's no question that a ban would help. But would a law keep drivers from texting? We'll have to see."
The 2010 Florida Legislative Session begins March 2, 2010.
