(PRNewsChannel) / December 23, 2009 / Tampa, Fla. / Dr. Seth Forman is used to diagnosing skin cancers in his office, but he says he’s seeing more and more Hispanic patients with the disease. The Tampa dermatologist says he’s seen a fifty percent increase in Hispanic patients who have some form of skin cancer.
“Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with melanoma being the deadliest form,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “I am seeing more Hispanic patients with melanoma, simply because patients with darker skin tones don’t believe they are susceptible to the disease. They wait to see a dermatologist, and by then, the cancer has advanced.”
Dr. Forman says no one is immune to skin cancer. That's why he suggests wearing sunscreen daily, no matter if you work indoors or outdoors.
“Sun exposure can increase your skin cancer risk,” he says. “Having five or more sunburns in your life, no matter what age, doubles your risk of developing melanoma.”
A new study published in the December issue of the Archives of Dermatology showed melanoma diagnosis is up 2.4%, with more than 68,000 new cases reported this year.
“Melanoma is the least common form of skin cancer, but it’s the deadliest,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “79% of all skin cancer deaths are melanoma related. That is why it is so important to protect your skin and see a dermatologist regularly.”
