The Palms of Largo Raises $11,000 to Help Alzheimer’s Research
Employees contribute to the 2008 Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® held in St. Petersburg and their boss John Goodman of The Goodman Group nearly doubles it.

(PRNewsChannel) / Largo, Fla. / The Palms of Largo community has raised $11,000 in the fight against Alzheimer’s as staff members, caregivers and others joined families of those affected by Alzheimer’s in the annual Memory Walk®.
For the mid-September walk in St. Petersburg, The Palms of Largo community generated $5,600, John Goodman of Minnesota-based The Goodman Group, which operates The Palms of Largo, contributed another $5,300 this week, and The Palms of Largo threw in another $100 to make it an even $11,000.
That total is more than FIVE times the amount of money raised last year. And out of more than 100 teams joining the effort in the Bay area, The Palms of Largo ranked first in the amount of money raised by its team members.
“I think this shows the community that the folks who work on The Palms of Largo campus are dedicated,” says Tammy Dunlap, a program coordinator at the Palms of Largo and the team captain for this year’s walk, “not only to the care our residents receive, but also to go outside the box to do whatever it takes to somehow try to make a difference for those we take care of now and possibly in the future.”
The St. Petersburg walk is one of more than 600 happening in communities around the country. Since 1989, The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk® has raised more than $225 million to help those battling Alzheimer's and other dementia related diseases.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, as many as 5 million Americans are living with the disease. Alzheimer's destroys brain cells which causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer’s gets worse over time, and it is fatal.
The annual event in St. Petersburg is the nation’s largest effort to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Next year’s local walk is already being planned and will take place in Hillsborough County.
