Torrential Rain Creates Perfect Storm for Mold Growth in Homes, Dorms and Hotels, Expert Warns

How dogs are being used to sniff out mold humans can’t see or smell.

(PRNewsChannel) / August 27, 2007 / Chicago, Ill. - The torrent of wet weather finally ended in Chicago, but now it may be time to start worrying about mold, a local expert warns.

Joe Cascone of MoldPro.net says days of downpour created the perfect storm for sometimes dangerous and harmful mold growth.

“Mold grows when there’s dampness,” says Cascone, whose company detects and eliminates mold. “Because of the intense amount of rain we had there’s a good chance there’s a lot of mold growing in homes, dorms, schools and businesses but you just don’t notice it yet.”

Cascone’s company uses specially trained dogs to sniff out mold that otherwise would go undetected.

“There are many different molds,” says Cascone, “Mold Pro has its dogs trained on 18 specific molds that are commonly found in homes, resorts and hotels and in dorms.”

“As soon as the canines detect mold, they point their snout at the mold,” says Cascone, “they don’t move from that spot until the handler acknowledges the alert.  It’s incredible to watch.”

While most molds are harmless to humans, certain strains of molds may be dangerous or even lethal to infants, people with asthma and those with allergy sensitivities.

Molds, however, pose no known danger to dogs.  And because canines have a keen sense of smell, they can be trained to be perfect mold detectors.

Cascone says he expects to be busy answering calls from people who want mold detected or eradicated.

“Mold is something you definitely don’t want,” says Cascone.  “And unfortunately Mother Nature just rolled out the welcome mat.”
