NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. / An innovative new self-defense DVD helps cane dependent people around the country learn how to turn a weakness into a reliable strength and the ultimate advantage in a physical confrontation. Produced by some of the leading cane self-defense experts in martial arts today, ‘Cane-Fu: Moving Beyond Disabilities’ provides simple, effective ways for the elderly and sick or injured to thwart potential assaults, simply by using their canes.
The ‘Cane-Fu’ self-defense DVD is the brainchild of Grandmaster Clifford C. Crandall, Jr., and Eric Stalloch, one of the chief instructors of the American Martial Arts Institute in New Hartford, N.Y. Crandall heads the school and has more than 45 years of martial arts training, including several specialties. Having written six books in the field of martial arts and produced 10 instructional videos, Crandall has mastered not only the material, but also the art of teaching to people of any background. In his role as chief instructor at the American Martial Arts Institute, Stalloch brings 21 years of martial arts expertise, a sixth-degree black belt and cane master certification, along with a sophisticated knowledge of the anatomy and biology of the human body that helps students better understand their self-defense techniques.
“You don’t necessarily have to be in good physical shape to defend yourself, you just need to know how to manipulate the human body,” says Stalloch. “Unfortunately, these people who are dependent upon canes for their mobility are generally preyed upon because of their perceived disabilities, which means they need all the help they can get to learn how to protect themselves from possible assault.”
For 65 minutes, ‘Cane-Fu’ walks the viewer through detailed, step-by-step techniques that enable those who may be cane dependent to ward off assailants and render attackers ineffective. And while these cane self-defense techniques are certainly invaluable to those who have to use them, an equally important benefit remains for those who are fortunate enough to never have to use them. Stalloch says he and his fellow instructors often see an immediate impact in the quality of life of their students.
“We wanted to teach people what they can do so they can defend themselves and improve their quality of life,” says Stalloch. “Having this cane and knowing what to do with it improves how they feel about themselves and makes them feel safer and more confident about their personal security and about themselves as individuals.”
