The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute Announces the 2010-2011 Class of Fellows

PR NewsChannel) / July 09, 2010 / COLUMBIA, Mo. / Six leading journalists and industry professionals will spend the 2010-2011 academic year at the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI), where they will work to develop new revenue and technology strategies for the future of journalism.

The 2010-2011 class of Donald W. Reynolds Fellows includes entrepreneurs, digital game and Smartphone developers, and leaders in civic and print journalism. The annual Fellows Program invites journalism scholars to develop new ways to gather, process and deliver news, information and advertising. The Fellows spend an academic year at RJI, part of the Missouri School of Journalism, working on a project of their choice.

This year's Fellows are:

David Cohn, director of Spot.us.
Fellowship project: Community Funded Reporting

Anne Derryberry, news editor and columnist at Learning Solutions Magazine.
Fellowship project: The Wire: A 2.0 Ecosystem for Journalism

David Herzog, associate professor of print and digital news at the Missouri School of Journalism.
Fellowship project: Open Missouri

Joy Mayer, associate professor of print and digital news at the Missouri School of Journalism.
Fellowship project: Ditch the lecture. Join the conversation.

Lisa Skube, vice president of strategy for Pop Art.
Fellowship project: Reconstitution of news prepares for Web 3.0

Will Sullivan, interactive director at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"We are excited to welcome a new class of innovators," said Pam Johnson, executive director at RJI. "The Institute will provide this diverse group of experts with the facilities and technologies to find solutions to the perplexing problems that challenge journalism today."

The Fellows will work with other leading journalists, scholars and students at RJI, which brings together citizens and journalists in programs aimed at improving journalism in democratic societies.

About the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute
The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute engages media professionals, scholars and citizens in programs aimed at improving the practice and understanding of journalism. Part of the Missouri School of Journalism, RJI collaborates with news and technology companies, professional associations, foundations and individuals to generate and test innovative models and technologies for journalism and advertising. Six Donald W. Reynolds Fellows spend an academic year at RJI, working with Missouri faculty and students and RJI staff to develop new ways to gather, process and deliver news, information and advertising. RJI was launched in 2004 with an initial $31 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. In 2009, the Foundation awarded the Institute an additional $15 million for operating support.

David Cohn
Fellow’s Project: Community funded reporting
Expand, research and test community funded reporting through Spot.Us and more

Background:
• As a technology reporter turned new media scientist, David Cohn is the founder of Spot.us, a Web site pioneer in community-funded reporting.
• Cohn has written for numerous publications including Wired and the New York Times. He is a board member of NewsTrust and has participated in journalism experiments like NewAssignment.Net.
• He holds a master’s in new media from Columbia University and a bachelor’s from the University of California, Berkeley.

Anne Derryberry
Fellow’s Project: The Wire: A 2.0 Ecosystem for Journalism
Create a game-based online environment that brings together professional and citizen journalists to produce news stories.

Background:
• Anne Derryberry has received awards from both the City and County of San Francisco, along with the California State Legislature for her commitment to the community.
• For more than 11 years, Derryberry led Informania, Inc., a multi-million dollar consulting company she founded that specialized in custom technology-delivered training and communication programs.
• Currently she works as an industry analyst with Sage Road Solutions LLC and is news editor for Learning Solutions Magazine.

David Herzog
Fellow’s Project: Open Missouri
Develop a Missouri government data portal to encourage increased use of data among journalists and citizens.

Background:
• As a journalist and journalism educator for more than 20 years, Professor Herzog specializes in using geographic information system (GIS) tools to report the news. He is the author of the book Mapping the News: Case Studies in GIS and Journalism
• Before joining the Missouri School of Journalism in January 2002, Herzog spent five years as an investigative reporter at the Providence Journal in Rhode Island, where he used computer-assisted reporting to cover public corruption. Earlier, he was the editor for computer-assisted reporting at The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., a business reporter for the Baltimore Sun and general assignment reporter for other newspapers in Pennsylvania.
• He currently services as the academic advisor for the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting. Herzog holds a bachelor's degree in radio-television-film from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Joy Mayer
Fellow’s Project: Ditch the lecture. Join the conversation
Reconceiving the relationship between news providers and the people formerly known as their audiences.

Background:
• As the design editor for the Columbia Missourian, Mayer supervises Missouri School of Journalism students who produce the newspaper, both print and online. While at the Missourian, she helped create a groundbreaking Web site for the paper.
• Mayer previously worked for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune as the assistant news design editor, features designer, kids’ page section editor, business news editor and copy editor. She has also worked at the Wichita Eagle, The Paper, The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and The Oklahoma Daily.
• She received a bachelor’s in journalism and news communication at the University of Oklahoma.

Lisa Skube
Fellow’s Project: Reconstitution of news prepares for Web 3.0
To develop, design and deliver a strategic action plan that combines the strengths of the legacy press with a world-class citizen journalism movement. 

Background:
• Lisa Skube has 17 years of experience providing marketing, branding and identity initiative support for a range of for-profit and non-profit organizations. Her experience includes program analysis, communication outreach, capacity building, audience assessment, brand building and interactive strategy.
• She has partnered with vendors on client programs such as M+R Strategic Services, Pop Art, Civic Actions, Galit Consulting, Winning Mark, ONE/NW, Jennergy, Bright Bridge Marketing & Communications, Green Fire Productions, and Shepherd Interactive.
• In addition, Skube has helped a variety of businesses and social change organizations evaluate, develop, integrate on/offline programs to refine, promote, fund or manage their brand and consumer strategies including: Hewlett Packard, Captaris, Daimler Brands, the National Freedom of Information Coalition, the National Institute on Money in State Politics, Montana Conservation Voters, and others.

Will Sullivan
Fellow’s Project: Mobile: Future Opportunities
Developing strategies for news organizations to use mobile technology to report deeper, faster and more accurately for and with their audiences.

Background:
• Sullivan has won more than a dozen awards for his innovative interactive work from organizations including the Online News Association, Editor & Publisher EPpy Awards, Pictures of the Year International, Society for News Design and the National Press Photographers Association.
• Sullivan is co-founder and co-director of the National Press Photographers Association Multimedia Immersion workshop, which has taught almost 200 professional photographers how to thrive in the multimedia environment. He has taught and led workshops around the country for organizations including South By Southwest Interactive, The Poynter Institute and the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME).  He’s been invited to guest teach at more than a dozen universities and has consulted for major journalism corporations.
• Sullivan's news and technology blog Journerdism.com was selected by Harvard University's Nieman Journalism Lab as one of the 10 Best "Future of Journalism" blogs, he's one of The New York Times’ picks for the best Twitter users for interactive journalism and one of the top 15 minds on Mashable.com's journalism Twitter list.
