Doctors Go Flashy on the Internet
The days of doctors having no Web site or one without pizzazz are numbered thanks to a new doctor’s group.

“A Web site is a like an office on the Internet and doctors should have flashy, professional and state-of-the-art Web sites,” says Dr. John J. Ryan, president of IADMD, the Int’l Assoc. of Dental and Medical Disciplines.
Dr. Ryan founded IADMD nearly five years ago. Fed up with a health care system that routinely leaves doctors out of the treatment equation, IADMD is comprised of dentists and physicians who are working together to empower doctors to wrestle back control of medicine from insurance companies.
The group is wiring every doctor who joins with state-of-the-art doctor Web sites enhanced with Flash, online bill pay and offers tools to help them communicate more effectively with their patients.
According to a poll conducted last month by InteractiveDad.com, the online parenting magazine, 76% of parents say they would use their doctor’s Web site to ask for prescription refills if that were an option, but 56% say neither their child’s pediatrician nor their own primary care physician has a Web site; 28% say they had no idea whether their doctors had a Web site.
The Web sites offered by IADMD are loaded with goodies: a custom address (like www.drjohndoe.com), state-of-the-art graphics and a professional design that can be easily customized and e-commerce functions so patients can pay online or order products from their doctors. Membership to IADMD is $1899 a year.
Dr. Ryan checked around and was quoted figures of $3-$5,000 for building a similar type of doctor Web site elsewhere, plus monthly fees for hosting and maintenance.
“If this sounds like a steal that’s because it is,” says Dr. Ryan. “People need to know that they are getting a bargain.”
