Tampa, Fla. - Dogs are famous for fighting crime and guiding those who can’t see.  But now man’s best friend is getting groomed for a new job:  Bed bug detector.

“A canine’s sense of smell is hundreds of times stronger than a human’s eyes,” says Donna Coberly of Excelsis Detection.  “We use dogs to find the bugs before people get bitten.”

Excelsis Detection has figured out how to train dogs to sniff around hotel and motel rooms, cruise ships and homes to detect bed bugs where they frequently become a problem.

Just mentioning the word bed bug is enough to make most of us cringe.

While bed bugs have been known to carry pathogens and diseases, they’ve not been linked to disease transmission.  But that doesn’t mean bed bugs are a minor problem.

Some people can get skin infections and develop scars after scratching bites.  And bed bugs can cause so much trauma, they’re even blamed for causing post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Bed bugs are a nuisance at best,” says Coberly. “They’re definitely unwelcome and uninvited guests and we can detect them so an exterminator can get rid of them.”

Bed bugs are elusive, transient and nocturnal which makes them extremley difficult for humans to spot.

But the Excelsis dogs are trained to smell live bed bugs

The company works in tandem with a pest control service.  After one dog detects live bed bugs, a second dog confirms the find, then a visual inspection is made by the Excelsis dog handler and the pest control company and the bed bugs are erradicated.

Using dogs, Coberly says, is quicker than relying on humans.

“It takes a canine minutes to inspect an area that takes a pest control professional one or two hours to inspect,” says Coberly.

She says it’s critical, especially in the hospitality industry, to stay one step ahead of the bed bugs.

“We can find the bugs before a customer is bitten,” says Coberly.  “This way they can rest easy and so can management.”

About Excelsis Detections:  Excelsis Detections uncovers bed bug infestations in commercial properties such as hotels, resorts, and cruise ships.  Excelsis also provides services in single-family homes, and apartment complexes as well as in hospitals, nursing homes, and university dormitories.

Interview Requests:  Donna Coberly is available for television, radio or newspaper interviews.  The dogs are available for photo ops or to be videotaped in action.
