NBCUniversal LogosNBC Universal is proud to recognize Lester Holt, anchor, “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt,” for being named the 2016 Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). The annual award honors a distinguished black journalist whose body of work has extraordinary depth, scope and significance to people in the African Diaspora.

“Lester embodies everything that is great about NBC News,” said Craig Robinson, Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, NBC Universal. “We’re proud to be his colleagues, and are excited for this honor which acknowledges his extraordinary work and contributions through the years.”

Holt, a 35-year news veteran, joined NBC News in 2000 serving MSNBC. Exhibiting a standard of excellence, Holt was named the permanent anchor of NBC Nightly News in June 2015, making history as the first black solo anchor of a flagship newscast of a major American television network. Holt is also Principal Anchor of “Dateline NBC,” the network’s signature news magazine and longest-running show in prime time, a fill-in anchor and correspondent of “TODAY,” and a MSNBC contributor.

The award-winning NBC Nightly News is the most-watched evening newscast in America, providing the very latest on the day’s top stories and most pressing issues. The broadcast carries a legacy that spans more than six decades, beginning in 1948 – when NBC started broadcasting television’s first-ever regularly scheduled network evening newscast.

“Lester Holt is a dynamic broadcaster who is diligent in his pursuit of the facts and demonstrates a stellar work ethic that shows up in his reporting, which also provides context and superior coverage for television and digital audiences,” said Sarah Glover, Social Media Editor, NBC Owned Television Stations, and NABJ President.

Recently, in April 2016, The Hollywood Reporter featured Holt as one of the Most Powerful People in New York Media.  In early 2016, Holt reported from Brussels on the terrorist attacks that took place at the city’s airport and metro station. He also reported from Paris on the terrorist attacks in November 2015 and January 2015. Previously, Holt anchored from South Africa during the Nelson Mandela memorial service; reported from the streets of Cairo on the latest political and civil unrest in Egypt during the Arab Spring; covered the earthquake and nuclear crisis in Japan; and reported on the immediate aftermath and response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti.
