Top lobbyist Jack Burkman (top) takes on Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) for U.S. Speaker of the House.

Even as the “reluctant House speaker” starts measuring the size of his new office and prepares to hire staff, Jack Burkman, a top D.C. lobbyist and U.S. House speaker candidate, is on Capitol Hill today looking for votes for himself, warning House members that elevating Wisconsin senator Paul Ryan to the powerful House position would be a “huge mistake” and lead to more of the same discord.

“Paul Ryan is a simply a young version of John Boehner,” says Burkman, who last week sent a letter to Boehner announcing that he was interested in the job and has the chops for it. “Ryan and Boehner are little more than tweedle dee and tweedle dum. And this would be a huge mistake for the Republican party.”

Burkman’s efforts today on Capitol Hill as he lobbies for votes that would put him third in line to the presidency, is a sign that Burkman, who’s also a syndicated radio show host and frequent commentator on local and network news programs, is willing to fight to become U.S. Speaker of the House.

“Why as a Conservative caucus must we end up in the same position time after time, year after year, always being forced to sacrifice Conservative values for the expediency of the moment and pleasing the media,” Burkman asks rhetorically. “Ryan will cave on the debt ceiling, seeking to win praise from the Post and the Times and CNN. And our country will go further into debt, and take yet another step toward becoming like Italy and Spain.”

In his letter to Boehner, Burkman explained why having an ultra-Conservative lobbyist like him in the position makes sense.

“At first, it may seem counterintuitive to select a top lobbyist and syndicated radio show host as Speaker. But I believe my unique skillset is exactly what’s needed at a time when even the GOP is divided,” Burkman said in his letter, which was covered by POLITICO. “Ideally the new Speaker should be an excellent communicator and media savvy. I’ve been a commentator on news channels opining on the issues for more than a decade. I am a proven and effective communicator. (House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s unfortunate statements illustrates how vital good communication skills are.)”
