Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteResponding to a new study published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman agrees that, contrary to previous belief, adult onset eczema is common.

According to the study, the majority of eczema symptoms began after adulthood, with only 40 percent of the studies participants reporting symptoms that appeared during childhood.

“Many patients can develop eczema later in life without having a previous history of skin conditions,” said the Tampa Dermatologist. “The inside of elbows, knees, neck and hands are the typical areas that are affected.”

Also called atopic dermatitis, eczema is an itchy red rash that can appear all over the body according to the National Eczema Association. Approximately 30 million people, mostly children, in the United States suffer from the condition.

While previous reports have suggested the skin disease is most common among infants and children, Dr. Forman says that might not be the case.

“Previous studies have suggested that atopic dermatitis is not as frequent in adulthood, however this study reports the opposite,” said Dr. Forman whose clinical trials for eczema are ongoing. “Most of my patients that have participated in my clinical trials have been adults and seniors.”

The Tampa dermatologist says that although there is no cure for eczema, most people can manage its symptoms.

“It’s important to keep the skin moisturized to prevent and relive itching that can lead to infection from damaged skin,” said Dr. Forman. “Steroid creams such as hydrocortisone and prescription creams and ointments work best when applied to damp skin to prevent inflammation.”
