Most of them are American but the impact of their philosophies and concepts helped to build the renaissance of Japan as an industrial power so they could later be transferred to Europe and America.

He mentions that quality is free, defining it as “fulfilment of requirements” and indicating that 100% fulfilment equals zero defects. He establishes that, in organisations that do not work with a plan that covers quality, wasted labour and materials can reach from 20% to 40%. He promotes the 14 steps to manage quality in another book called “Quality without Tears”.

Philip Crosby introduced the improvement programme while trying to educate companies so they would focus their efforts on the need to achieve quality. The aim was to eliminate a large number of inspections by doing things right the first time.

His most recent book about leadership, “The Absolutes of Leadership” was published in 1996.

Philip Crosby was born in Wheeling, Virginia on 18 June 1926. Between taking part in the Second World War and the Korean War, Philip Crosby began his work as a quality professional in 1952 at a medical school. Philip Crosby’s career began in a chain production line where he decided that his goal would be to teach a management style where preventing problems would be better than being good at solving them. He worked for Crosley from 1952 to 1955; Martin-Marietta from 1957 to 1965; and  ITT from 1965 to 1979. While working as a quality manager for Martin-Marietta, he created the concept of zero defects. During his 14 years as Corporate Vice-President of ITT, he worked with many industrial and service companies around the world, deploying his pragmatic philosophy and finding that it was applicable around the world.
