Reporters say press release content lacking, new survey shows

An expert on press releases says news releases should be chock full of resources to better help reporters do their job, yet many companies forget that Missed opportunity? PR NewsChannel logoDay in and day out, public relations and other professionals work tirelessly to craft press releases to distribute to the media. However, a new report suggests that the content of those releases aren’t cutting it.

According to a recent survey conducted by Isebox, a PR technology company and multimedia distribution platform, journalists are dissatisfied with the lack of content in press releases.

The survey of North American journalists and media professionals found that reporters feel overwhelmed with a hefty workload. But instead of seizing that opportunity, PR people are apparently blowing it: A whopping 68-percent of those surveyed said that their careers have become more difficult over the last five years because of a lack of support from PR resources.

Journalists reported that the majority of press releases they receive don’t include multimedia content, forcing them to spend additional time gathering the sources they need to produce their stories.

“The most alluring press releases have great content,” says Tyler Ragghianti from PR NewsChannel, a global press release distribution newswire created by journalists. “As messengers, it’s important that we make press releases a one-stop-shop. No journalist wants to feel as if they’re pulling teeth to get the information.”

The study validates that. 65 percent of the participants want press releases to give them easy access to photos, videos and infographics while 80 percent feel including this information is important for crafting the best story.

“We not only distribute press releases but we write press releases here at PR NewsChannel,” says Ragghianti. “We do our best to make the press release a destination and, using links, a gateway to other websites. Make it easy for reporters to find what they need.

“The most successful press releases cover all bases including digital and visual content. Those are the ones that are most likely to be picked up and journalists will value you as a more credible source for future stories.”
