The first-ever Gasparilla Interactive Festival (GIF) took place in Tampa.

The first ever Gasparilla Interactive Festival (GIF), a community event spotlighting cutting-edge technologies, digital innovation and entrepreneurial inspiration, took place today at Port Tampa Bay in Channelside.

The event showcased a multitude of presentations, forums and discussion topics from some of the brightest minds and innovative thinkers in emerging technology. Topics discussed included innovation in business, digital advertising and entrepreneurship.

More than 150 people were in attendance at the technology festival. Experts say it’s another sign that Tampa has become an insurgent hub for tech.

Among the featured national speakers at the Gasparilla Interactive Festival was Faris Yakob, the award-winning advertising strategist and creative director and one of the founders of Genius Steals. Yakob kicked off the Gasparilla Interactive Festival as the event’s first speaker featuring a visual presentation discussing the creative aspects of advertising, intellectual property and various marketing elements.

“Community is the most vital part of your business plan,” said Savannah Peterson, another keynote speaker and global community manager at Shapeways, a company leading the world’s largest community of 3D printing entrepreneurs. “They’re your largest sounding board and generator of new business.”

Other speakers in attendance included Joanna Lord, VP of marketing at Porch and Peter Shankman, founder at ShankMinds Business Masterminds.

“We’re extremely pleased with how our efforts came together,” said Vinny Tafuro, the executive director of the Gasparilla Interactive Festival. “Success from this year’s event will only set the stage for years to come.”

The title sponsor of the event was ConnectWise. Partners include AAF Tampa Bay, Ad 2 Tampa Bay, Hillsborough County, EDI2, University of Tampa, Port Tampa Bay, Visit Tampa Bay, The Publicity Agency, Collaborative Technologies of Tampa Bay, Schifino Lee, OT9 Design and the Gasparilla International Film, Art and Music Festivals.
