GIF-logo-wide-transparentThe Gasparilla name has a long standing history in the Tampa Bay area. That history is quickly moving into the 21st century as the inaugural Gasparilla Interactive Festival (GIF) brings technology to Gasparilla Arts Month.

What started with a $25,000 grant from Hillsborough County’s Economic Development Innovation Initiative (EDi2) has, in recent weeks, quickly picked up support. The festival is being promoted throughout the southeast by community partners and with donated advertising coupled with media appearances.

And this Wednesday, February 18, the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners will issue a proclamation declaring March 6, 2015 as “Gasparilla Interactive Festival Day.”

“The excitement is building and we’ve got great momentum,” says Vinny Tafuro, the executive director of the Gasparilla Interactive Festival (GIF).

The first Gasparilla Interactive Festival will be a one-day speaker series and expo on March 6, giving local entrepreneurs and professionals a front row seat as they hear national speakers talk about digital innovation and technology coupled with round table discussions about innovation’s regional impact.

The festival is the latest addition to the March “Gasparilla Arts Month” schedule. The Gasparilla Festival of the Arts runs February 28 through March 1 with GIF on March 6 and the Gasparilla Music Festival March 7 and March 8. The festival season ends with the Gasparilla International Film Festival taking place March 24 through March 29.

Confirmed speakers for GIF include Faris Yakob, founder of Genius Steals LLC; Joanna Lord, VP of marketing at Porch; Peter Shankman, founder at ShankMinds Business Masterminds; Savannah Peterson, global community manager at Shapeways and Al Pittampalli, author of “Read This Before Our Next Meeting.”

Topics will include innovative technology, digital advertising and entrepreneurship.

The festival’s opening party will be the #collabTB (Q1 Tech & Entrepreneur Peer Networking Event) at District 3 by Collaborative Technologies of Tampa Bay on Thursday, March 5. The festival’s wrap-up party will be held at the Channelside Bay Plaza featuring music from the Gasparilla Music Festival.
