The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) announces the opening of We are the Music Makers! by Tim Duffy, in honor of Black History Month. FMoPA has steadily extended its platform of photographic exhibitions addressing social justice and civil rights issues by showcasing artists such as Dorothea Lange, Edmund Fountain, and now the work of Tim Duffy. FMoPA also offers wide array of photographic workshops, photo safaris, and children’s photography classes.

We are the Music Makers! is a documentation of photographer Tim Duffy’s 20 year quest to preserve Southern traditional music through the services of the Music Maker Relief Foundation. Portraits featured are the individuals and musicians (many of whom are disabled African Americans), Duffy has encountered along the way. Executive Director, Zora Carrier, in regards to the importance of this exhibition says that, “Museums are a great platform to address social justice and civil rights issues. The photos on display offer a true and unique view of a part of our society that may go unnoticed otherwise.”

The opening reception will be held February 6 from 6 p.m. till 8 p.m. with a lecture featuring Tim Duffy at 7 p.m.

Access is free for members while “Not-Yet Members” can make a $10 suggested donation.

About Music Maker Relief: Music Maker steps in and makes sure artists have what they need to live in safety and comfort. Music Maker partner artists frequently must survive on less than $10,000 annually. They may have to choose between food, housing and needed medications or face the types of unexpected expenses, such as illness or theft, that can cripple someone barely meeting their day-to-day needs. Poverty and economic insecurity are formidable obstacles to creativity, stemming the growth and health of our cultural traditions. The Music Maker Relief Foundation assists artists directly with emergency aid and career support, while giving future generations access to their heritage through documentation and performance programs.
