The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (FMoPA) announces the opening of Ezra Stoller: Photographing Modernism. FMoPA has steadily extended its platform of photographic exhibitions by showcasing artists such as Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, David Hilliard, and now Ezra Stoller. FMoPA also offers wide array of photographic workshops, photo safaris, and children’s photography classes.

Ezra Stoller (1915-2004) was an American photographer who lived and worked in New York between the 1940s and the late 70s. Despite not having identified himself as an art photographer, Stoller’s work reflects his mastery of artistic compositional principles while simultaneously commanding the medium of photography. Stoller believed that architecture was art, but notably his photographs of structures are often as equally well known as the architecture itself. FMoPA’s Director, Zora Carrier, says, “Stoller is considered one of the premier photographers of architecture and even though there has been extensive scholarship about the artist in New York and elsewhere, this will be the first time Stoller’s work will be shown in Tampa.”

“My work is the result of being trained in architecture school. Vitruvius’ ‘Twelve Books of Architecture’ with his three prime requirements for a structure – function, construction and honesty/beauty – forms the basis of my belief. A building interests me on an intellectual level when it fulfills these conditions. And I try to find the viewpoint in my photographs that will express those three conditions best.” – Ezra Stoller

Access is free for members while “Not-Yet Members” can make a $10 suggested donation.
