Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteTampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman says the stresses of the holiday season, mixed with high sugar consumption can cause unwanted skin breakouts and suggests proven ways to combat them.

While he understands these factors may be unavoidable this time of year, Dr. Forman maintains that knowing the causes and disciplining your body will lead to better holiday photos and memories.

“Stress causes the body to produce cortisol, while sugar increases insulin production, both leading to excess oil on the skin,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “Oily skin increases the likelihood of acne and other skin blemishes appearing.”

To contest unwelcomed breakouts, Dr. Forman ultimately suggests to not over-indulge during the season and to take a step back and enjoy the moment, while also presenting a few treatments your dermatologist can perform to clear your skin in a pinch.

The Tampa dermatologist says cystic inflammatory acne bumps can be cleared overnight with a low dose, painless steroid injection. Many rashes can be cleared within a few days or less with the right prescribed medication. Most of these treatments are covered by insurance.

Dr. Forman also offers other tips for lessening the appearance of skin blemishes. For starters, patients are urged to resist the temptation to pick at acne bumps, as that can prolong their duration and can lead to scarring. He also suggests patients use caution when using ‘internet cures’ that are often times false and potentially dangerous.

“If you are in need of a quick cure for your skin, please be safe and see your skin care professional,” adds the Tampa dermatologist.

Dr. Forman spoke with Stacie Schaible of Tampa’s NBC-affiliate WFLA on the topic earlier this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLjpVrrppDE&feature=youtu.be

Dr. Forman is the founder of Forman Dermatology and Skin institute, located in Tampa, Fla. and has appeared on TV shows across the country, including the nationally syndicated show “The Doctors,” to provide sun-protection tips and to demonstrate his breakthrough skin cancer treatments.
