Local 18 - Johnny JardineAs unions are under constant attack from Right to Work advocates, one Ohio union has responded with videos that educate the public on the importance of unions and how they continue to serve the Ohioans every day.

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 (IUOE Local 18) has released the latest 30-second video that sheds light on the benefits of union membership.

Created in response to the anti-union efforts of Right to Work advocates, the “Providing…Since 1939” series of videos sheds light on how union membership has benefitted Ohioans for the last 75 years.

This latest IUOE Local 18 video features retired operator, Johnny Jardine, who knew from an early age that union membership was the path to a good life.

“I’ve been a member of this local since 1958,” Jardine says in the 30 second video. “We just grew up knowing that the union was the right way to go.”

The video campaign, which began on Labor Day, features 12 videos that highlight the benefits retired union members gained from their experiences with Local 18 and what they’ve contributed to the state of Ohio.

“Our members are proud Ohioans,” says Pat Sink, business manager for IUOE Local 18. “They’ve spent their lives building this state into what it is today.”

Opponents of the Ohio Right to Work effort, also called “Workplace Freedom,” contend that the initiative’s true purpose is to kill unions and worker protections, ultimately leading to a weaker middle class.

By stripping workers of their rights and freedoms, business owners would be free to lower worker pay, reduce worker benefits and ignore worker rights.

TEXT OF THE VIDEO:

I’M JOHNNY JARDINE

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF THIS LOCAL SINCE 1958

I GREW UP, WENT IN THE ARMY AND WAS IN THE KOREAN CONFLICT

SHORTLY THERE AFTER BEING DISCHARGED I BECAME A MEMBER OF LOCAL 18

I’VE ENJOYED THE CAMARADERIE FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS

WE JUST GREW UP KNOWING THAT THE UNION WAS THE RIGHT WAY TO GO

I LIKE TO TELL THE GRANDKIDS WHEN WE GO BY SOMETHING THAT I HAD A HAND IN, “THERE’S ONE OF THE OLD MAN’S PROJECTS THAT HE WORKED ON.”

SO, IT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD
