For success story Larry Engle, earning a career as an addiction professional didn’t come easy. As a former addict, making a difference in others’ lives required him to change his own.

He decided to pursue his educational journey when he enrolled in the alcohol and drug counseling program at the Elk Grove campus of InterCoast College in an effort to help others with similar issues.

InterCoast College is a private career college with campuses in California and Maine designed to provide associates degree and diploma level career programs that prepare students to succeed in specialized fields of allied health, legal, business and trade industries.

The alcohol and drug counseling studies program focuses on providing students with the tools they need to professionally administer counseling services to people who suffer from substance abuse and addiction.

The curriculum covers a wide range of topics including counseling fundamentals, addiction treatment and relapse prevention, ethical conduct and relevant laws, pharmacology and the brain as well as skills-development to enhance personal and professional growth.

Engle admits that he didn’t take the program seriously in the beginning, resulting in a failing grade for his first test.

“I wanted to quit but my instructor told me not to give up because it was only the first exam,” said Engle. “That was a turning point for me and I realized that I was going to have to put a little more effort into my studies.”

Knowing the first exam didn’t define his education, Engle’s study habits changed greatly. He made an effort to fit in time to study prior to his exams by getting to school early. He also surrounded himself with fellow counseling students who wanted to excel in the program and partnered with them by forming study groups.

“I knew I was going to get what I earned and after that I didn’t fail another test,” said Engle. “I started getting A’s and that really helped me build my confidence.”

In addition to studying hard and self-application, Engle exceled most in the externship portion of the program because it provided an opportunity to get hands on experience in counseling, providing himself a chance to exceed his own expectations.

“I tried to go the extra mile and never said no to anything,” said Engle. “I treated it like it was already my job which is what really got me ahead.”

Engle completed the program by earning straight A’s and credits much of his success and new found career to the staff at InterCoast.

“Failure was never an option,” said Engle. “My instructors kept me motivated and gave me the direction I needed. They truly wanted to see me succeed.”
