Richard MarshallThe International Union of Operating Engineers Local 18 (IUOE Local 18) today released a new addition to a series of videos focusing on the benefits of union membership: the pension program and the security it provides to members.

The series, “Providing… Since 1939,” was created as a response to Right to Work efforts that are aimed at destroying unions.

The latest IUOE Local 18 video features Richard Marshall, who talks about how he was destined to be a union retiree.

“I knew, someday I was going to retire from the union,” Marshall says in the 30 second video. “I liked everything that the union had to offer me.”

The video campaign began Labor Day and includes 12 videos that feature retirees reflecting on life as a union member.

At a time when unions have come under siege through Right to Work efforts that are designed to destroy unions, these videos are designed to educate Ohioans about why unions were established and how they continue to serve and benefit families to this day.

“Unions made a difference in 1939 and continue to make a difference in people’s lives to this day,” says Pat Sink, business manager for IUOE Local 18. “Our union is comprised of great men and women who’ve been able to raise, educate and care for their families because of their hard work made possible because they know we have their back.”

Opponents of the Ohio Right to Work effort, also called “Workplace Freedom,” contend that the initiative’s true purpose is to kill unions and worker protections, ultimately leading to a weaker middle class.

By stripping workers of their rights and freedoms, business owners would be free to lower worker pay, reduce worker benefits and ignore worker rights.
