Tampa Bay’s premier community day school, Hillel Academy, adds new faculty members, announces summer Professional Development programs attended by faculty , and introduces an entrepreneurship project for 8th graders

Hillel AcademyAmy Wasser, Hillel Academy’s Head of School, is pleased to announce two additions to the school faculty. Sara Fisch has been hired as the school’s Reading and Learning Specialist. Ms. Fisch will partner with the school’s classroom teachers to bring the best tools to the Hillel Academy students and faculty to ensure the need of all learners are met.

Nancy Berman joins the Hillel Academy middle school team as the Judaics teacher. Ms. Berman has many years of experience in the Jewish community and will be a valued asset for the Tampa Bay community day school.  

Faculty Professional Development

Many of the Hillel Academy faculty members attended extended education courses during the summer in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) 21st Century Learning Academy – Susan Ben Avraham, Pam Bromberg, Alicia Flasher, Pam Fonte and Dale Solomon

Experiential Science Education Conference – Amy Basham

Reading and Writing with the Common Core – Stephanie Brown, Elizabeth Glidden and Rebecca Guindine

Hillel Academy’s Operation Manager, Susan Guess, attended a workshop on Safety at the Front Desk.

Faculty Accolades

Hebrew teacher Mazi Goldenberg spent 10 days at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Ms. Goldenberg was awarded a fellowship from the Legacy Heritage Teachers Institute.  

Grant Slater, Hillel Academy’s Athlete Director, spent his summer involved in film in addition to athletics. Mr. Slater and his brother Todd Slater of Slater Brothers Entertainment directed and produced the film “The General”. It was selected from over 5,000 submissions from over 60 countries for exhibition during the 18th Annual Flickers: Rhode Island International Film Festival. The film which will be in contention for the Flickers’Grand Prize for Best Feature Film. (Award to be bestowed this month.)

Eighth Grade Students to Study Entrepreneurship

Hillel Academy eighth grade students will have the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship during the 2014 – 15 school year. The project will be conducted by Forward Thinking Initiatives, a nonprofit that has been teaching in the Tampa Bay area since 2005. Hillel Academy’s art teacher, Deb Campbell, is the owner and instructor of this program.

The goals for the project include exploring and mastering: cross cultural and economic issues of the target country (South Africa), transportation logistics, the role of customs, exchange rates, insurance, payment, contracts, working with Fair Trade companies and sustainable communities, marketing and sales, and how to develop a corporate philanthropy.

In order to meet the project goals and maximize their learning experience, the eighth grade students will go through the process of starting a small trading company and operating a retail “store”. The young entrepreneurs will develop and use a company sales pitch as part of their sales and marketing campaign.

Hillel Academy offers morning bus service from North Pinellas county with bus stops at Temple Ahavat Shalom, Woodlands Square in Oldsmar, and Westchase. Bus service from South Tampa also is offered for the 2014 – 15 school year.
