UkraineAs talks continue regarding Ukraine’s inclusion into the EU, President Viktor Yanukovych is continuing to look forward in an effort to lead his country through the recent crisis.

With the door still very much open for Ukraine’s inclusion into the European Union, President Yanukovych has pushed for roundtable discussions to help end the current disagreement between the government and protestors.

“I have invited representatives of all political forces, priests, representatives of civic society to a national dialogue,” said Yanukovych in a translated statement. “I am personally prepared to take part in such a round table.”

Held on Tuesday, the nationally televised discussions featured the three former Ukrainian Presidents working to resolve the political crisis that has swept the country.

Recognizing the need for a unity and understanding, Yanukovych reiterated prior to the talks that he was dedicated to finding peace.

“I have said many times that the only possible way for us is the way of reconciliation and understanding. Actions of all sides must be occurring exclusively within the framework of the laws and Constitution,” said Yanukovych in a statement. “As President of Ukraine and as Guarantor of the Constitution I will do everything possible for normal functioning of the country, protection of the rights and interests of each citizen, ensure peace in our country.”

Although Ukraine has experienced significant inner conflict, many observers have commended Yanukovych on his leadership during this difficult time.

Last week, President Yanukovych helped Ukraine secure an estimated $8 billion investment from the Chinese government while a separate delegation met with Russian officials to discuss existing trade issues relating to railways, customs clearance, meat and dairy products and Ukrainian chocolate.

Yanukovych and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso have also agreed to renew talks on several aspects of a European Union Association Agreement.

Ukraine was widely expected to sign an Association Agreement on November 29. However, the government decided to suspend preparations for the signings at the last minute due to difficult internal economic conditions, pressure from Russia, and a lack of meaningful financial support from the EU.
