Tobacco addiction affects a substantial portion of the world’s population. Yet with all that we know about its dangers, many people continue to smoke. But most smokers want to quit. “Disease Interrupted: Tobacco Reduction and Cessation” (ISBN 146791293X) is a new textbook that explores the highly treatable and dangerous disease known as tobacco addiction.

Edited by Drs. Charl Els, Diane Kunyk and Peter Selby, “Disease Interrupted” offers entries and information from 50 experts within the health community who come from all over the world. Funded by Health Canada, this book is considered to be the first Canadian text focused on tobacco addiction and cessation. It features the complete summary statements of Canada’s first national Clinical Practice Guidelines for Smoking Cessation.

This resource focuses on a wide range of related issues, from mental health disorders to youth smoking. With smoking as a risk factor for major health conditions such as heart and lung disease, stroke, and cancer – tobacco being identified as the leading preventable cause of death – there has never been a better time for “Disease Interrupted” to be published.

“Disease Interrupted” offers insights on the difference between the use of tobacco and being addicted as well as treatments to achieve reduction and cessation. The guide highlights over 70 years of research that shows the troubling health effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke. The experts also provide readers with a comprehensive overview of safe and effective methods for quitting, addressing the risks and benefits associated with using medications to quit smoking as well.

Students and professionals in the health care industry will find “Disease Interrupted” especially useful, as well as consumers and their families. The experts behind this guide hope that readers will be informed and motivated to incorporate the management of tobacco addiction into their everyday health care practices.

“Disease Interrupted: Tobacco Reduction and Cessation” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
