Ichneumonidae

"Ichneumonidae" by Edmond Constantinescu

In “Ichneumonidae: Darwin’s Theological Dilemma and the Rethinking of Creation” (ISBN 1475280629), Edmond Constantinescu provides a modern language for speaking about faith and religion in an age when the triumph of science and reason has liberated man in so many ways. His book is titled after the paradox that befuddled Charles Darwin, the 19th century scientist who laid out the foundations of evolutionary biology. Darwin observed so much cruelty in nature that religion seemed powerless to explain, driving the former believer to become an agnostic.

In his text, Constantinescu lays out a path, suggesting some possible resolutions between science and religion, looking at the evolving concept of God as a human-mind product. From his lifelong study of religion, he concludes there are two basic models defining God’s relationship to creation. One considers nature and man to be the absolute object of God’s action, while the other, which came with the arrival of the European Enlightenment and scientific thinking, proposes man as a God-empowered subject of his own destiny and salvation. In essence, it argues that God created nature and endowed it with its own self-creating power.

Constantinescu looks to heal some of Darwin’s discontent. While the scientist was a genius in his ability to recognize the clarifying principle of evolution undergirding all of Earth’s life forms, he failed to see how the concept of God has evolved as well over the many centuries. He also reflects back on his own life, from being a Fundamentalist pastor convinced of certain rigid doctrines to achieving the courage of maturity that allowed him to accept some of life’s essential uncertainties.

“Ichneumonidae” will appeal to educated readers seeking to understand how science, religion, evolution and Christianity figure into humanity’s plan. He does not attempt to offer pat religious explanations as answers but rather seeks to explore questions, leaving the ultimate answers in the hands of readers.
