The National Cancer Institute has awarded Moffitt Cancer Center researchers Gwen Quinn, Ph.D., and Susan Vadaparampil, Ph.D., with a training grant to develop a Fertility Reproduction and Cancer Training Institute for Oncology Nursing (FRACTION).

The award averages more than $250,000 a year for five years. This R25 training grant will develop a network of 250 trained nurse specialists to implement the knowledge gained about reproductive health issues and cancer treatment, empower their patients to make decisions about fertility, and ultimately improve the quality of life for cancer survivors.

“Given the improvements in cancer treatment and survival that have occurred over the past several decades, the unique reproductive health needs of this group must be considered – beginning at diagnosis, ensuring optimal quality of life,” according to Quinn, co-director of the Survey Methods Core Facility.

Compared to other health care providers, oncology nurses are more likely to have multiple interactions with patients prior to the initiation of cancer treatment and are in an ideal position to discuss quality-of-life issues such as fertility and reproductive health with patients, noted Quinn.

This award reflects Moffitt’s dedication to education and training. Moffitt trains more future oncologists than all other institutions in Florida combined. Residents and post-graduate fellows hone their skills in detecting, preventing, and treating cancer. While here, they see how the strength of Moffitt’s interdisciplinary team model makes every facet of a patient’s care more complete and every member of the team more knowledgeable.
