- Coverage of the verdict on HLN anchored by Nancy Grace garnered a record five million viewers.
The following are comments from crisis management public relations expert Glenn Selig, founder of the PR firm The Publicity Agency, on fallout from the Casey Anthony case, the money that may be made and defending clients in the court of public opinion.
Selig briefly represented Jose Baez, lead attorney for Casey Anthony, when Caylee went missing and Casey was suspected in her daughter’s disappearance:
ON THE ‘GET’ INTERVIEW:
It’s clear that Casey Anthony will be the interview everyone wants. Every news organization is after it. But if money is involved: What sort of backlash might they get if people find out that Casey Anthony received money? Would it be worth it for the network to risk a possible viewer or advertiser backlash?
This is about as toxic as it gets and if Casey Anthony is perceived to be cashing in on her 2 year old’s death it will reflect very poorly on her and those who paid her. If she is offered money, how could she turn it down, given the fact that she likely to be shunned everywhere she goes? And since just about everyone is talking about this, there will be tons of questions if she does do an interview. And you can count on the networks that lose out on the interview to make sure the world knows the real story of how the interview came about. So, no every news outlet tempted to pay anything for access or licensing knows the world will be watching.
In the OJ Simpson trial, those associated with the case made money, but Simpson was shunned. It is very possible given the public’s belief she is guilty, that same sort of outcome could happen here.
ON CASEY ANTHONY PROFITING:
I think Casey Anthony making money off of this will be most difficult even though she might have an incredible story to tell.
If big money comes from anywhere, it will be from the entertainment world–movies and books–where payment is commonplace. And the less of the story that is told now, the more valuable a book or movie deal will be.
ON MEMBERS OF THE JURY
I think the members of the jury have a story to tell–perhaps even the most incredible story to tell–because they haven’t said anything. That could be a book by itself and you could make the arguement that because they arrived at the verdict they did, their story is now worth more than it would have been had they found her guilty. To much of America, it was such a shock. And now millions of people are scratching their heads and asking what were they thinking while they were sequestered? What did they talk about while they were deliberating? And why is it when the public sees it so clearly, they could find her not guilty? Once one juror talks, the value on the rest of the juror’s stories will diminish.
WHY THIS IS A COMPELLING STORY:
It is an ideal story because there is still an unknown aspect of this case. If Casey didn’t do it, who did?
ON CINDY ANTHONY:
Cindy Anthony was certainly a sympathic person in this at one time. But since there is now doubt about what happened, the public really doesn’t know what to believe about her. Caylee’s death remains unsolved. I don’t know how the public will react to Cindy, given she’s Casey’s mother and now no one is sure what the heck happened. Who did do this if Casey didn’t?
ON CAPITALIZING ON THIS CASE:
Whoever is looking to make money on this needs to be very careful because just talking about capitalizing on the death of a child feels dirty. Profiting in any way won’t sit will with anyone. It seems wrong. And publishers, production companies, networks… all will factor this into the equation.
HOW MUCH MONEY MAY BE MADE
The more questions there are about whether the public will support any of these books or movies will factor into the price that is paid. If those paying perceive it to be slam dunk profit, they will pay big dollars. If there are many question marks, it will impact what is paid. And right now, there are questions at least for most of the major players in this case and it is still too fresh to fully assess.
CASEY ANTHONY STORY ON NBC NETWORK
One thing you can count on is a ‘Law and Order’ episode “based” on this case with a nice disclaimer that the story is not real. And they won’t have to pay anyone a dime.
ON REPRESENTING PEOPLE WHO ARE ACCUSED
We will always consider representing people who are accused because we believe that people are innocent until proven guilty. There is a reason why we have a criminal court system and it should not be up to Nancy Grace, Bill O’Reilly, Shep Smith or any other news or entertainment personality to determine that. Each person should be allowed to receive a fair trial and conviction in the court of public opinion often inhibits that. We do what we can to make sure people who are accused are treated fairly in the court of public opinion.

The prosacution had three (3) years to prove that caylee is in fact dead…? The same three (3) years to prove beyond a dought as to who killed her…? And what we seen on TV was the best of their efferts…? Don’t throw rocks at the Jury, the Defence, or even Casey… A woman of her mentality to carry off a murrder like this is next to impossible.
The public is looking for an escape goat. Put any one on trail and convict them and nothing more would be said. The public is giving far more credit to Casey then she deserves… Enought said… Thanks for hearing me.

Now we have another “cold case” that will never be solved. Poor little girl is just another number on a file that will sit in a warehouse somewhere forever. DO NOT SUPPORT ANYTHING TO DO WITH CASEY ANTHONY! Be proactive…write the TV networks and express your disgust. Write their advertisers. Don’t watch the networks that propagate and profit from a precious child killed by her own mother.

Yes, it is a travesty that Casey Anthony is walking free today. The reason that she is walking free is something that no one has actually discussed. Everyone wants to blame the system, the jury etc. The truth is the reason Casey is walking away from this relatively unscathed falls squarely on the prosecutor. Yes, Mr. Eloquent did what I have seen District Attorneys all over the country do repeatedly and that is charged her with a crime that he did not have the evidence to support. Instead of charging her with something that he could support he opted for the sensational, get my face on the tv and name in the news charge of first degree murder.
It was first degree murder but he was missing some key components to actually get a conviction on that charge. Actually the jury did their jobs, they listened to the evidence and came to the only verdict that they could have arrived at given the lack of “cause of death” etc. People should be outraged at the District Attorney and his office for not charging her with “abuse of a corpse”,” improper disposable of human remains”. He had the proof for that, in fact he had a confession that supported those charges and both are felony’s and carry some serious incarceration time. Why not charge her with what he could prove beyond reasonable doubt and put her away. That would have taken her off the streets and he or someone else in that office could then take their time trying to make a murder case for the future. I put the blame squarely where it belongs and that is the publicity hungry prosecuter’s in this country. It is a shame that it has come to this but this is a direct result of the media focusing so much attention on cases like this that drives the bus here.
Lee, you said a mouth full! You are absolutely correct. But I don’t think people should be outraged at the prosecution, the defense and definitely not the jury. They all had a job to do and they did it. The prosecution just aimed too high. I know people are angry, mad as hell, and upset but people it is time to move on. Deep down in my heart I feel she is guilty as sin. I saw her cryinng in the courtroom because she was so scared. But where were the tears for her daughter. The one that she murdered. Not one of those tears were for little Caylee. The whole time she was sitting in that courtroom I didn’t see one shread of remorse over her daughter’s death. She sat there taking notes of the whole thing. And when she thought things weren’t going to go her way, then came the waterworks. All the lies she has told, and not one thing said about it. Yes, she got time for lieing to the police, but the other lies got swept under the rug. To me even those tapes they showed of her in jail she acted like she on some kind of picnic when talking to her parent. Like I said to me she got away with murder. Remember Casey, the day you go to meet your maker, Jesus will have the final judgement. And somehow in my heart I feel that judgement WON’T be in your favor. At least I hope not. You are nothing but a cold wretched woman.

I am so disgusted with the jury that I cant even sleep at night now. It says to me that our jurys now do not have to do anything but come back with a verdict. They no longer have to ask questions, they no longer have to ask to see any evendince in the case, they no longer have to try and come to justice…..all they have to do now is listen to the judges orders, let it go in one ear and out the other, and then come back in 10 hours with a verdict…. just disgusting. Our system says we should respect the jurys decition? and I always have except this time ,,because this jury did nothing to try and serve justice. All they did is give a verdict and go home… I am so upset that our peers don’t even care anymore.
